ELLEN - 01 - ELLEN AT 8 YEAR OLD

Summary of "ELLEN - 01 - ELLEN AT 8 YEAR OLD"

At eight, Ellen faces neglect as her mother prioritizes partying over parenting. After being placed in a loving foster family, Ellen adjusts to stability and catches up in school with support. Despite her progress, she battles self-doubt when confronted by a classmate's hurtful comment, fearing rejection again.

“Ellen, why are you late again?”

“I’m sorry, teacher.”

Yes, Ellen, eight years old, is always late for school.  Her mom, Mary, could not get up in time to take Ellen to school in time.  That’s because Mary is out galavanting at night and wants to sleep in the morning.  Mary takes Ellen in the car at night and leaves Ellen in the back seat while she goes up to her “friend’s” apartment.  They are partying while Ellen sits by herself in the car with just a pillow and a smart phone.  One evening a man came down from the building and handed Ellen a blanket.

This was Ellen’s life as a small child.

Word got out about Ellen’s life and at age nine she was placed with another family.

“Hi Ellen,” said her new mother.  “You can call me Mommy or Mom.”

"And I'm Dad."

“And I’m your sister, Liz.  I’m 10 years old.”

“And I’m your brother, Bob.  I’m eight.”

Ellen had to get used to her new life.  She shared a room with Liz.  She now showered every night and changed her clothes every morning.  The family ate dinner together every evening and the food was really good.

Ellen had fallen behind in school and wanted to catch up.  And she did with the help of a very nice lady who came to the house.

“Life here is like in the movies and in the shows you see on television.”  Said Ellen to Mom.

“We hope you like it here,” said Mom.  “We love having you.”

But Ellen was worried. There was a boy in her class at school who said,

“What’s wrong with you that you got kicked out from your first family?”

Ellen didn’t say a word but kept thinking,

“What’s wrong with me?  What’s wrong with me?  Will it happen again?  Will it happen again?”
